The History and Origin of the Hot Chicken Sandwich

What is a Hot Chicken Sandwich?

A hot chicken sandwich is a popular American sandwich consisting of cooked chicken, typically breaded and fried or grilled, served on a bun with various toppings and condiments. What sets it apart from other chicken sandwiches is the addition of spicy seasoning, giving it a unique flavor and heat.

The Origin of Hot Chicken

Hot chicken originated in Nashville, Tennessee in the 1930s. Legend has it that the first hot chicken was created by Thornton Prince, the owner of a Nashville restaurant called Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. According to the story, Thornton's girlfriend was angry with him one night and sought revenge by making his fried chicken dish as spicy as possible. However, Thornton loved the dish and decided to start serving it in his restaurant, where it quickly became a hit.

The History of the Hot Chicken Sandwich

While hot chicken as a dish has been around for nearly a century, the hot chicken sandwich is a relatively recent creation. The first hot chicken sandwich is said to have been served at the Big Shake's Hot Chicken and Fish restaurant in Franklin, Tennessee in the early 2000s. The sandwich quickly gained popularity and has since become a staple of Southern cuisine.

How to Make a Hot Chicken Sandwich

Making a hot chicken sandwich at home is easy and can be done in a variety of ways. Here's a basic recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 buns
  • Toppings of your choice (lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayonnaise, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the chicken breasts in half lengthwise to make 4 thin pieces.
  2. Place the chicken in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  4. Remove the chicken from the buttermilk and dredge each piece in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken to the skillet and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes per side.
  7. Assemble the sandwich by placing the chicken on a bun with your desired toppings.

The hot chicken sandwich may be a relatively new addition to the world of sandwiches, but its spicy flavor and Southern charm have quickly made it a fan favorite. Whether you prefer your hot chicken sandwich breaded and fried or grilled, with traditional toppings or something more unique, there's no denying that this sandwich is a delicious and satisfying meal option.
